Monday, May 09, 2005 - Danger on the Buses (and everywhere else)

Kenneth from Mellieha in Malta has had a dreadful experience on the bus back to his home:

"Right now, to calm down, I'm eating loads of chocolate (I do not drink coffee) because my heart is still beating faster than normal. At least I am sharing this horrible and fearful experience on this blog since there is no one awake who I can speak to".

Basically the poor guy personally fell victim to two issues that for many years now under both administrations has never been addressed successfully.

And what are these issues? The disgusting state of public transport coupled with the perpetual and largely unspoken physiological bullying that festers these islands from some sections of the arab community.

And before you start screaming racism at me you really need to read Kenneth's blog.

On Saturday night Kenneth was placed in a potentially dangerous situation on a bus on his way home. A couple of arabs were pissed and one of them started to - how can I put this? - take advantage of a young defenceless guy whilst travelling. One of them eventually sat next to Kenneth while the other looked on. This was after they had tried their luck with a young lady on the same bus after she had bid her boyfriend goodnight.

I think Kenneth (who, along with thousands of us, seems to have had a history of the crappy bus service over the years) handled this extremely well.

But what would have happened if things had got out of control? What if one of them were carrying a knife?

I think that one day a situation like this will get out of control and consequences could be fatal.

And ... Don’t tell me I am being dramatic because I'm not.

I was under the impression that these Arabs shouldn’t drink (or have I got it wrong?). I thought that the authorities were watching the current foreigner situation closely. Actually it seems that fuck-all is happening to protect ordinary Maltese citizens (girls, boys, women and men).

I think that the government is scared shitless of neighbouring countries and just don't want to rock the boat politically. So, as usual, its a case of grin and bear it while it's swept under a carpet in some government department.

As for the bus services ... Well, what can you say?

I have a message and questions to the government (which I know is waste of time because no Minister has the balls to constructively reply):

1. Travelling on public transport is a nightmare.
2. Travelling on public transport is a nightmare with the grave danger of these Arabs.
3. What do you intend to do to protect the Maltese travellers (and voters) in future?
4. What do you intend to do to take the sheer fear out of travelling around Malta?

I have been told many times that the public transport situation in Malta has become part of the fabric of the country - so much so that tourists actually brace themselves for the sheer experience! You can hear them in the pub back home:

"How was your holiday, Mavis?"
"Not bad thanks - but steer clear of the Maltese buses!"

Saturday, May 07, 2005 - Welcome (kind of)

Well, the arrival of this alleged 'Maltese related' new blogger onto the scene has gone largely unnoticed despite the 'welcomes' given to new bloggers at "Wired Temples" the other day when seven of the newbies were given a mention.

Perhaps my first blog, despite being honest from my point of view, was a bit too controversial or maybe I ruffled the wrong feathers or even rattled the wrong egos.

Still, it doesn't bother me and for ever onwards we go.

Before we go any further here is a very brief Q and A about this blog.

Why am my writing this blog? I don't have a particular agenda here just to write a few words and a few feelings about a few things that are they going on around us.

Why the Maltese connection? Because I'm connected!

Who am I? The Internet is a worldwide community and as such a don't feel I am significant or important enough to expose myself to the extent of others in this community.

Where am I from? I am a European in Europe.

What about Maltese politics? Exactly! What about Maltese politics!

What sort of person am I? Some regard me as rude and arrogant, I just like to think that I
speak my mind.

What turns me on? Hard work, no bullshit, determination and grit.

What turns me off? Arrogance, heads in the sand and fat overbloated egos.

Do I intend to pursue this blog on a regular basis? I'll put in a few words and do what I can when I can.

Tuesday, May 03, 2005 - Flushed away with lavatorial infactuation

I have just been cruising round the Maltese blog scene and came across this really ‘individual’ (if slightly abnormal) blog from a guy who's is congratulating himself on "the most memorable moments in my life this year".

"Manic magazine cover story, issued with The Malta Independent on Sunday, features a piece written by Ġużè Stagno about the day we met face-to-face for the first, and so far only, time."

To add to the editorial feast the blogger in question has reproduced the article which is punctuated throughout with endless lavatorial and other remarks. Here are just a few excerpts (so, Kleenex to the ready please):

"As if having just spent an unforgettable two hours in his company wasn’t enough to make me the happiest man on earth, he is now going to give me a parting gift"

"He has been one of my biggest idols (up there with Lennon, Elvis and George Best) for years, and I clearly remember the effect his programmes had on me as a spotty, geeky teenager."

"Dressed in black from head to toe, he looks like a Jewish pallbearer."

"Toni informs me he needs to use the toilet."

"Toni tries to hold it in"

"I start fantasising about newspaper headlines: ‘Broadcasting legend and literary enfant terrible arrested for exposing themselves in public!’" "Fortunately (incredibly, one can say), the latrine is still open"

"He keeps chatting, and I have the urge ...""...to check the man’s penis"

This is taking infactuation to extremes - especially when it's published in the press!

This was all published in a Sunday magazine in Malta - I read the really odd article in the UK and I have to say had a cocktail of emotions ... pity perhaps, worry about Ġużè's reputation as a full blooded Maltese, confusion, a kind of spooky concern for the whole article and the reputation of the publisher, yet alone the guy who was compared with Lennon, Elvis and Best.

It left me wondering exactly what was really on the agenda here? And did it merit a spread in the papers? I was left feeling uneasy, confused and quite uncomfortable ... if nothing else it's a very long time since I read such an odd piece.

I guess it's a warning to anyone who is even very slightly in the public eye - keep your private life private because the printed media has a haunting effect for a great number of years.
